New State Law Bans Mask Mandates in Tennessee

Tennessee lawmakers made some significant changes to COVID-19 restrictions in a special session last month including a new state law that bans mask mandates. Under the new law, government entities, including public schools, are blocked from requiring masks in all but the direst circumstances. For now, not much has changed, but if Governor Lee signs the legislation before his executive order expires on Nov. 5, he would not need to renew his mask order. Masks would become optional under the new law. However federal judges have temporarily blocked the order in Shelby, Knox, and Williamson counties and the new bill will not override that injunction.
